Why do we learn computing?
Through learning computing our students will use technology as a tool for learning and expression in a variety of disciplines and interests, becoming not just consumers of technology but creators of it. As a result, students will be empowered to use technology as an accessible medium for creative and personal expression, as well as a tool for representing and solving problems.
Our approach
Our curriculum is divided into three main strands:
- Coding
- IT for creativity
- Disciplinary competencies
Children in years 1-6 learn coding each year, ranging from creating simple movable blocks and using simple repeat structures in Key Stage 1 through to writing and debugging simple programs, working with variables and creating and improving a game in Key Stage 2.
Children also learn to use IT creatively, for example creating pictures in Key Stage 1 and using logo, animations and game creation in Key Stage 2.
Finally, we ensure that children learn specific disciplinary competencies throughout their time at Franklin. There is a strong focus on e-safety throughout and we teach children to use email, spreadsheets and even blogging skills.
