Why do we learn modern foreign languages?
At Ark Franklin, children from Reception through to Year 6, learn Spanish as an additional language, the study of which liberates children from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. Children will develop an interest in learning another language and in turn will also develop a deeper understanding of the multi-lingual world in which we live in. We are committed to ensuring that the inclusive teaching of Spanish enables children to interpret, create and exchange meaning within and across cultures and thus ensuring children have the strong foundations for further foreign language teaching at Key Stage 3.
In teaching Spanish, we aim for pupils to:
- gain the confidence, skills and understanding of how to learn a new language
- understand gain knowledge in grammar and use these as transferable skills to other subjects
- be able to communicate ideas, facts, and feelings and recognise key questions
- read at length and comprehend the core ideas and target language.
- write at length and express themselves with freedom within the target language
- use the target language in real life situations abroad
- have a joy for learning a new language and feel empowered to use it
Our approach
At Ark Franklin, all children are taught Spanish once per week by a specialist, native-speaker of Spanish. To promote an active learning of languages a range of teaching methods are implemented to ensure that the children are developing their linguistic skills through listening, speaking, reading, and writing to be secondary ready. Activities can consist of actions, rhymes, stories, song, drama, grammar focus, video clips, sentence structure, dictionary work, book making and many more creative ways to extend, embed and combine language skills.
